Growing Herbs and Vegetables in School Gardens

Gardening in schools is one of the best ways of introducing science, related to the growth and development of plants. It also relates to the “Healthy Schools Agenda” and the “Eco-Schools status”.

Furthermore, this is one of the best ways of introducing children to the origins of the food they eat or perhaps may even encourage them to eat. Since children can be quite fickle about some of the vegetables that is placed on their plate.

Even if there is no land surrounding school, you can grow plants in planters, grow bags, baskets, margarine tubs, old chimney pots or even an old pair of wellies.

A club can be formed either in school time or it can be an out of school club. However, getting a team together can comprise of teachers, governors, PTA or even a pupil’s grandfather and of course pupils.

Pupil involvement can aid in their decision-making process, particularly if they take ownership of their part in the project.

Don’t forget the young plants or produce that is grown can be sold as a fundraiser. When young plants are sold this can enable your pupils gardens to flourish too.

• Gives children a wider picture of ‘flora and fauna’.
• Aids in conservation of bees and insects plus they pollinate the flowers.
• Encourages children to be more self- sufficient as they get older.
