Life skills children learn on the playground

Children learn best when it’s fun. That’s why spending time on the playground with their friends is invaluable to their development. They learn so many life skills while running, climbing, swinging and sliding on playground equipment.

Take a look at just some of the key life skills children can learn through time on the playground.

Social skills

While playing with others, children learn and develop vital social skills. They figure out how to take turns and share the equipment, come up with games and role play scenarios, and communicate their ideas. They can also discover how to manage conflict with others through their play and learn how adapt their games to suit all the players.

Perseverance

There are many times in life where we need to grit our teeth and persevere. On the playground, children of different ages and abilities approach equipment in unique ways. Some find the balance beam really easy, while others wobble their way across. Having the perseverance to keep going and develop their abilities is a key life skill for them to learn. It’s also great for them to see others exhibiting different abilities to theirs.

Problem solving

We have to solve problems every single day, and the playground offers children a fantastic opportunity to do this on a micro level. When faced with a trim trail or climbing tower, children have to figure out how to successfully use the equipment and manage their own risk. They also have to adapt their games to which of their friends are on the playground.

The joy of being active

So much of modern life is sedentary and spent looking at a screen. Getting out onto the playground and learning the joy of being active in the outdoors is a great life lesson to learn. It will help them develop into outgoing young people who find pleasure in physical activity. Physical play also has untold benefits for their gross and fine motor skills.

Managing competition

Giving children the chance to manage competition is very important for their futures. On the playground, children can actively compete with each other for who can run the fastest, hold onto the monkey bars the longest, or complete the trim train in the quickest time.

They also have to manage resource competition and wait to take their turn on the swings or slide. Handling these little competitions well gives them a great baseline for other, more serious competitions later in life.
