West SILC School – A specialist Inclusive Learning Centre

A mud site transformed into an inclusive playground
artificial grass for an inclusive playground

The Challenge

We were called to West SILC School earlier this year and asked if we could design them an inclusive playground space. The playground had to be maintenance free and offer lots of space for their students to safely enjoy.

When we arrived, it was basically a mud site, plus it had a disused outdoor classroom. We knew there were lots of things we could do to transform this space into a fun, usable playground. This is what we suggested:

See below for the before and after photographs of this new, inclusive playground.

The Playground

We removed the outdoor classroom to free up lots more space to play. Out team then made good the ground by placing a layer of mud and stone onto the area.

We then fitted the equipment and of course to finish it off, we placed artificial grass over the whole area. This type of playground surfacing gives the children a dry, mud free play area solution. This works really well for the pupils of this school.
