West SILC School Inclusive Playground Design

The Challenge

We were called to West SILC School earlier this year and asked if we could design them an inclusive playground space. The playground had to be maintenance free and offer lots of space for their students to safely enjoy.

When we arrived, it was basically a mud site, plus it had a disused outdoor classroom. We knew there were lots of things we could do to transform this space into a fun, usable inclusive school playground. This is what we suggested:

Removal of outdoor classroom
130m2 of artificial grass
A canopy extending out from the school
Seating under the canopy
A water play system
Seating and planter area
A mud kitchen area
Large black board
Sand bin with lid

We removed their old outdoor classroom to free up lots more space to play. Out team then made the ground workable again by placing a layer of mud and stone onto the area.

We then fitted the equipment and of course to finish it off, we placed artificial grass over the whole area. This type of playground surfacing gives the children a dry, mud free play area solution. This works really well for the pupils of this school. The staff and students at West SILC School now really look forward to time spent playing and learning outside in their new, custom built playground.
