Herringthorpe Primary School

Adventurous, natural play equipment

The Challenge

We were approached by Christine Rolfe from Herringthorpe Primary School in the autumn of 2011. She has a beautiful new school building that was crying out for an equally stunning play space. Across the tarmac playground was a large expanse of grass, but unfortunately the ground was poor. Rubble was close to the surface and the grass was having difficulty growing.

Christine was sure this space could be used much more effectively. She wanted the new playground to have a natural feel and to be used all year round. So, we got to work designing the space and brought in lots of natural play equipment.

The Playground

The design team at Image Playgrounds got straight to work. With very few revisions required, the play area design was soon agreed upon. It incorporated bonded rubber mulch surfacing, leading all the way from the tarmac of the playground. This mulch went under all the equipment, allowing it to be used no matter what the weather.

Using only a handful of natural play equipment, the space meets the needs of a wide range of ages and abilities. The playground includes challenging climbing and adventure trail equipment for all ages. An exciting decked stage area provides a space for quiet reading, climbing, outdoor teaching and den making. Musical instruments and blackboards provide a platform for creative play.
